One of Brel's undisputed masterpieces, it was first perfomed at the Olympia in Paris in 1964 and received a three minute standing ovation. When love fails, as it often does in Brel's songs, there's the comfort of a faithful and sympathetic friend, such as we find in Jef, one of Brel's most noteworthy songs. The publication of the Fondation Jacques Brel is named Jef for this song, and their wonderful 3 DVD box set is titled with a line from Jef, "Comme quand on était beau." The pathos of extreme old age so vividly described here in such poignant detail. Brel was part of a volunteer acting troop that entertained in old age homes when he was young.
