Ingénieur de formation Bioris Vian débute sa carrière artistique en tant que trompettiste dans les clubs de jazz de
Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Malgré le succès et le scandale provoqué par les pastiches de romans noirs américains qu'il écrit sous le pseudonyme de Vernon Sullivan, parmi lesquels 'J' irai cracher sur vos tombes', l'un des best-sellers de l'année 1947, 'Et on tuera tous les affreux' et 'Les Morts ont tous la même
peau', les romans qu'il publie sous son véritable nom dans les années d'après-guerre, 'Vercoquin et le plancton', 'L' Ecume des jours'
ou encore 'L' Arrache-coeur', ne lui apportent pas la notoriété escomptée.
Egalement auteur de pièces de théâtre, de chansons et de poèmes, de critiques musicales, Vian mêle dans ses romans humour et mélancolie à une écriture poétique qui met en valeur son
imagination débordante. Malade du coeur depuis l'adolescence, il succombe à l'âge de 39 ans, laissant derrière lui une oeuvre riche et variée qui reste à ce jour inimitable.

One of Brel's undisputed masterpieces, it was first perfomed at the Olympia in Paris in 1964 and received a three
minute standing ovation. It's Brel's vision of freedom , the freedom of sailors to sing, dance, eat, carouse, whore and take pride in virility, the joy spoiled only by unfaithful women (who
probably have their own vision of freedom.) In his own words (translated): "Amsterdam is the symbol of the adventure which begins tomorrow which men dream of. It's kind of a song of virility, in
truth."
You may have heard Mort Shuman, David Bowie, Dave Van Ronk , Robert Cuccioli and countless others sing the English adaptation by Shuman/Blau, but if you haven't seen Brel present it in French,
you're missing the real thing.

When love fails, as it often does in Brel's songs, there's the comfort of a faithful and sympathetic friend, such as we
find in Jef, one of Brel's most noteworthy songs. The publication of the Fondation Jacques Brel is named Jef for this song, and their wonderful 3 DVD box set is titled with a line from Jef,
"Comme quand on était beau."
He wrote it in 1964 but this is a 1966 performance from a farewell concert at the Olympia.(Subtitle correction-- Jef weighs 100 kilos, not 10, or 220 pounds).

The pathos of extreme old age so vividly described here in such poignant detail. Brel was part of a volunteer
acting troop that entertained in old age homes when he was young. Perhaps that was where he drew his inspiration for this song. He performed it often and it is considered a
masterpiece.
